STATEMENT

ONCE, WHILE WALKING ALONG A PATH IN THE WOODS IN EARLY SPRING, I BRUSHED PAST A HUGE BUD ON A SHRUB. EXAMINING IT CLOSELY, I BECAME AWARE OF THE INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF ENERGY STORED WITHIN. AT FIRST, I SAW ONLY THAT BUD. THEN I SAW ANOTHER, AND YET ANOTHER, UNTIL I REALIZED I WAS SURROUNDED BY ALL KINDS OF LIFE FORCES GENERATING, CONVERTING,  CONCENTRATING AND EXUDING ENERGY.  THIS REALIZATION IS AT THE CORE OF EVERY THING I MAKE.

I AM ESPECIALLY ATTRACTED TO  THE IDEA OF TRAJECTORIES AND TRANSITIONS AND THE INEVITABLE PASSAGES  OF ALL LIVING THINGS.

I AM ALSO INSPIRED BY COLOR.

COLOR IS  ENERGY.

WEAVING IS MY  FORM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION.    ALTHOUGH I  USE A HAND LOOM THAT IS ENHANCED BY  DIGITAL THREAD CONTROL,  EACH  PROJECT IS A NEW INVESTIGATION OF STRUCTURE, TEXTURE AND COLOR. I BUILD MY PIECES IN LAYERS DIGITALLY AND THEN WEAVE THEM LINE BY LINE, USING AN 8 COLOR ROTATION THAT BLENDS AND YIELDS NEW COLORS AND TEXTURES.

THIS PHYSICAL PROCESS, EXACTING AND TIME BASED IS RELEVANT TO THE CONTENT.  THE TRANSITION FROM THREAD TO MATRIX, EMBEDS MY LIFE FORCES INTO THE FABRIC YIELDING AN OUTCOME I HOPE, THAT VIBRATES WITH ENERGY.

PROCESS A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT I DO

I AM A JACQUARD WEAVER.

THE TOOL I USE IS THE TC-2.

THIS IS A HAND LOOM THAT CONTROLS THE THREADS DIGITALLY.    I  WIND THE WARP, THREAD THE HEDDLES AND THROW THE SHUTTLES. IT IS A VERY PHYSICAL AND DEMANDING  PROCESS.  ONE THAT YIELDS A CLOTH THAT IS ALIVE WITH THE TIME, EFFORT AND ASPIRATIONS THAT I HAVE PUT INTO IT.

I  START A PROJECT WITH A PHOTO SHOOT.  I  COMBINE IMAGES,   MANIPULATE AND DRAW INTO THEM CREATING A COMPLEX, DYNAMIC COMPOSITION.

 I DE-CONSTRUCT  THE IMAGE/S BY COLOR.

THEN, I APPLY WEAVE STRUCTURES TO THOSE COLOR AREAS.

BECAUSE WEAVING IS SUCH AN ANCIENT CRAFT, I AM SURE THAT WHAT I AM DOING HAS BEEN DONE BY SOMEONE SOMEWHERE...NEVERTHELESS, I INVENTED MY OWN PROCESS, WEAVE STRUCTURES AND METHODS.

I USE OPTICAL BLENDING TO GENERATE THE WIDEST RANGE OF COLORS.  I USE 8  COLORS IN MY SHUTTLES AND 2 WARP COLORS (CURRENTLY)  AND COMBINE THESE INTO  185 POSSIBLE COLOR VARIATIONS.

I ALSO INSERT A SUPPLEMENTARY WEFT INTO THE CLOTH AS I WEAVE . SOME REFER TO THIS AS, BROCADING. THE PROCESS CAN TAKE UP TO A MONTH OR MORE, DEPENDING ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE FILE, AND THE WEAVING.
